Introduction
Olympe de Gouge contributed to the women’s rights movement and countless other causes throughout her lifetime. Her plays, pamphlets, and other writings impacted social conceptualizations of equal rights and gender bias in France during the 1800’s and later, globally (Paul). Her best known work, the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen, written in 1791, challenged accepted norms of her time such as male dominance. Olympe de Gouges’ works should be included in a high school curriculum not only due to their significance as documents of the early feminist movement, but also because of the courage she displayed in upholding her values in a society that repressed her at every turn.
